Astrid Lindgren is Sweden’s most famous and influential author of childrens literature and Vimmerby puts most people in mind of her since this is the place where she was born and grew up.

Vimmerby is a small city with a village feel located in Smålands beautiful countryside. Here you will find paddocks and forests, lakes, the Moose Park  and several golf courses. And many of the attractions here are, of course, connected with Astrid Lindgren.

Astrid Lindgren’s World was founded in 1981 and is a theatre and theme park where visitors can experience characters from Astrid Lindgren’s books in their true settings. According to the park’s charter, Astrid Lindgren’s World shall encourage children to read and write. Astrid Lindgren’s World receives some 450,000 visitors every year, 30% come from abroad.

But Astrid Lindgrens World is not only one world but many worlds, all in one place.

Walking around the park you pass well-known settings such as Cherry Tree Valley and Wild Rose Valley. Not far away, but in a whole other world, you’ll discover Matt’s Fort. Walk on and wouldn’t you know it, there’s Villekulla Cottage. And on the way you’ll have probably already stopped at Karlsson’s Roof and Katthult. These are all settings taken from Astrid Lindgren’s stories. But of course they wouldn’t be nearly as exciting without the people who live there. What would Villekulla Cottage be without Pippi? Or Matt’s Fort without robbers?

Every day in these living settings, there are stage performances featuring scenes also taken from the books. What makes the performances extra special is that our audience can get right up close to the action, and sometimes even end up in the thick of it. You can also watch theatre performances at our three stages around the park: the Main Stage, Small Stage and Puppet Theatre.

Food is an important aspect of the total experience at Astrid Lindgren’s World who has initiated collaboration with award-winning chef and restaurateur at Långbro Värdshus outside Stockholm, Fredrik Eriksson. Fredrik is a former chairman of the Chef of the Year Association, and has a host of gastronomic experiences and awards on his CV.

Chef Fredrik Eriksson

A few years ago they removed hamburgers and chips from the menus, and now they are taking yet another step forward and replacing nearly all part-baked products with authentic, home-cooked Swedish fare made from locally produced ingredients. Visitors here will experience an authentic, healthy culinary experience, that supports local trade and reduce food miles being a burden on the environment.
